The Obamas' Guest List For French State Dinner: Hollywood Stars, Donors, Politicos & Activists...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus with her father, Wiliam Louis-Dreyfus
Booksellers' report and full guest list: Bradley Cooper, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mindy Kaling, Cicely Tyson, Jeff Zucker, Jason Collins, Edith Windsor...
Washington, DC - Hollywood celebrities, Cabinet Secretaries, members of Congress and the French Parliament, major Democratic donors, civil rights activists, journalists and business leaders were among the 352 people filling the eclectic guest list on Tuesday evening for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama's State Dinner honoring President François Hollande of France.

Guests were formally announced as they arrived through the Booksellers entrance in the East Wing beginning at 6:30 PM, where they were faced with a scrum of scribes and photographers.

Stephen Colbert with wife Evie
Comedy Central talk show host Stephen Colbert arrived with his wife, while Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper brought his girlfriend and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus brought her father.

The real second in command, Vice President Joe Biden, and his wife Dr. Jill Biden were ready to celebrate; Biden’s son Hunter Biden and wife Kathleen were also invited.

Actress Cicely Tyson and comic Mindy Kaling were also ready to party, as was “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams, CNN head honcho Jeff Zucker, the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has a show on MSNBC, and Harbinger Pictures and The Help producer Brunson Green.

"Bonjour Prime Minister Hollande! Bienvenue aux Etas Unis! #statedinner," Kaling tweeted with a photo of herself showing the gown she wore to the White House.

Rev. Sharpton with Aisha I. McShaw
Sharpton told reporters he'd been brushing up on his French ahead of the dinner, and demonstrated:  "Oui oui oui," he said.

Chef Dan Barber arrived with his brother David Barber.  They co-own two New York restaurants Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns.  Dan has offered advice on Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden, and the First Lady has hosted two luncheons at Stone Barns.  The President and Mrs. Obama dined at the Greenwich Village Stone Barns in 2009.

Edith Windsor, whose landmark same-sex marriage case before the Supreme Court changed federal law, might have rubbed elbows with fellow guest Associate Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan and Rachel Robinson, the widow of baseball great Jackie Robinson.

Jason Collins, the first NBA player to come out as gay, said he thought the dinner would be "fun."

"I wonder if @FLOTUS can save a dance for me tonight?! I'm sure @BarackObama won't mind," Collins tweeted before the dinner.

Mindy Kaling, at left
There was going to be no dancing at the most important social affair of the President's second term, a Senior Administration Official told reporters during the press preview on Monday.  Thanks to Hollande arriving stag for his State Visit following his sudden split from his longtime girlfriend and France's acting First Lady, the White House was intent on avoiding anything that might make tabloid headlines.

R&B star Mary J. Blige would be performing--and dining as a guest--but apparently no one was going to be allowed to boogie down.  Blige, wearing a red gown, declined to reveal if she'd change to perform, and what she'd be crooning:  "It's a surprise," she said.

Labor leader and immigration reform activist Eliseo Medina was invited; the President and Mrs. Obama met with him during his hunger strike with Fast for Families on Capitol Hill last year, when he and the group fasted to protest House Republicans refusing to take up immigration legislation.

Some of the lawmakers Medina rebuked were also guests:  Former vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), who blew by reporters without pausing to comment.  House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) did stop to chat, and introduced her date: Her daughter.

With the midterm elections looming next Fall, the Obamas invited more than two dozen major Democratic donors, including Irwin Jacobs, the Qualcomm Inc. founder who has given over $2 million to pro-Obama super PACs, and Jane Stetson, the Democratic National Committee's finance chair.

Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, arrived with her husband, designer Duro Olowu.  Mrs. Obama hosted a luncheon at the museum last year.  Interior decorator Michael S. Smith, who designed the Obama's private residence in the White House, was on hand.

The media contingent included Joanna Coles, editor in chief of Cosmopolitan; Jill Abramson, The New York Times’ executive editor; Margaret Russell, Editor in Chief of Architectural Digest; Robert Kaplan, a national correspondent for The Atlantic;
Steve Clemons, the Washington editor-at-large for The Atlantic.

Coles told reporters she was happy to be at the White House because it's "no dump," and added that she hoped her black, leather bodiced dress was not "too slutty" for the formal affair held in a massive heated pavilion on the South Lawn.

Several White House correspondents hopped to the other side of the ropeline to dine with the Presidents: Julie Pace of the Associated Press, Steve Holland of Reuters, Julianna Goldman of Bloomberg News, and Corine Lesnes of Le Monde. Tangi Quéméner of Agence France-Press was also a guest; he served as the White House pool reporter when the two Presidents visited Monticello on Monday

TESLA inventor and CEO Elon Musk, Marriott International hotels CEO Arne M. Sorenson, YogaFit founder Beth Shaw, and Pete Selleck, chairman and president of Michelin North America, were among the business leaders, as was Philippe Pierre Dauman, President and CEO of Viacom, and Randall Stephenson, Chair and CEO of AT&T Inc. Perhaps they all talked cash with guest Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

Top Administration officials and the President's Senior Advisors were also on the guest list, including Secretary of State John Kerry; Attorney General Eric Holder and his wife Dr. Sharon Malone, a close friend of the First Lady; Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel; Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell; Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett; the President's chief speechwriter Cody Keenan; Mrs. Obama's Chief of Staff Tina Tchen, and Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the UN.

Power drew a blank when reporters asked the designer of her vibrant green dress.  She called on her husband, Cass Sunstein, a former Administration official, to check the label, then dutifully reported it was designed by Badgley Mischka.

Peter Shumlin, Governor of the State of Vermont, Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of the City of Baltimore, and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) were also among the politicos.

Schumer said he was excited about the food: The White House, he declared, has "great dinner rolls."  Alas, none were featured on the four-course menu, which spotlighted American cuisine, and the produce of small farmers and "cheese artisans."

The main course was dry-aged rib eye beef from a family farm in Colorado, served with Jasper Hill Farm blue cheese from Vermont. The White House also served three wines made by American vineyards with deep roots in France.  CLICK HERE for the four-course menu and CLICK here for all posts about Hollande's State Visit.

The State Dinner was the Obamas' seventh, and the first time since 1996 that a French President has been honored at the White House.  Hollande arrived on Monday and will travel to California on Wednesday before returning to France.
