Friday: Michelle Obama To Deliver Keynote At PHA's 2014 'Building A Healthier Future' Summit

Washington, DC - On the heels of celebrating the fourth anniversary of Let's Move!, First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver the keynote address this Friday, March 14th at Partnership for a Healthier America's (PHA) third national childhood obesity summit, "Building a Healthier Future."  

The two-day conference begins on Thursday at the Washington Hilton and is open to the public. It will bring together hundreds of "philanthropic, government, academia and private sector leaders to discuss real solutions to ending America’s childhood obesity crisis," PHA said.
  
Mrs. Obama serves as honorary chair of PHA, the independent foundation that supports her Let's Move! campaign, and keynoted PHA's two previous summits.  During the Let's Move! anniversary celebration, Mrs. Obama unveiled a series of policy announcements, including a proposed update to FDA's Nutrition Facts label and permanent changes for the National School Lunch Program.  She also announced new partnerships for Let's Move!.

Let's Move! Executive Director Sam Kass will headline an event at the summit on Thursday.  During an outing on the main stage, Kass will interview James Beard Award-winning chefs Hugh Acheson of Atlanta, Georgia and Barbara Lynch of Boston, MA, in a discussion about creating healthy lunches "inspired by" the MyPlate and USDA nutritional guidelines, "but with the James Beard award-winning flair we have come to expect," said a PHA spokesman.

The chefs' creations will be served to attendees during Thursday's luncheon at the summit. 
 

"Hugh Acheson is an award winning chef, author, and restaurateur, and a judge on Top Chef," while Lynch "is a celebrated chef of eight Boston area restaurants, cookbook author and founder of the Barbara Lynch Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating healthy, inspired and dignified future’s for Boston’s youth," PHA said.

Ahead of the interview, Kass and the chefs will also host a Twitter chat on Thursday morning at 11:30 AM EDT on @PHAnews and @LetsMove, using the hashtag #PHASummitChat.

Birds Eye frozen foods, which first partnered with Let's Move! in 2012, is "the premier sponsor" of the summit, and executives will be making an announcement about a new commitment to support Let's Move!, according to PHA.

The fee to attend the summit is $599.00 for general registrants, trade associations and corporations, and $399.00 for members of 501(c)3 organizations and foundations, government employees, and academics.  Online registration is now closed, but attendees can register onsite at the Washington Hilton.  More info: ahealthieramerica.org/summit/registration/.
