Washington, DC - By Presidential Proclamation, September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month, and First Lady Michelle Obama is getting some new supersized support for the Let's Move! campaign. NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal will become the latest sports hero to endorse the initiative when he joins Mrs. Obama for an event this Friday, July 6th at Orr Elementary School in the Southeast part of the District, the East Wing announced today.
Mrs. Obama will "announce new commitments around Let's Move! Active Schools," according to the East Wing, and she'll also be discussing healthier school lunches and showing off her athletic skills during play time with the kids.
O'Neal comes to Let's Move! as a brand ambassador for shoemaker Reebok, which last February pledged up to $30 million to help Mrs. Obama get 50,000 schools enrolled in Let's Move! Active Schools over the next five years. The public-private partnership is designed to help schools provide children with the federally recommended sixty minutes of daily physical activity.
3,700 schools have signed up in the last seven months since Mrs. Obama launched the project as she celebrated the third anniversary of her campaign, according to her office.
Olympic track & field champion Allyson Felix will also join Mrs. Obama; she will be representing NIKE, Inc. which has pledged $50 million to the project. Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes, co-chair of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will also join the fun. President Barack Obama hailed the efforts of such champions last week in his Proclamation naming September as 'National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month 2013.'
North America Reebok president Uli Becker will also be at Friday's event. Orr Elementary "participates in BOKS, an initiative of Reebok and the Reebok Foundation which incorporates physical activity and nutrition into programming for kids before the school day," the East Wing said.
"Orr Elementary School has been a great example of what schools all across the country are doing to provide healthier environments for kids," the East Wing said. "Not only has Orr successfully implemented the new healthy school lunch standards, but they’ve already started providing healthier snacks in vending machines--a move all schools will make starting next school year."
DC Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson is also scheduled to attend.
"The First Lady will deliver remarks about healthy changes happening in schools and across the country, and then participate in a physical activity with children and the athletes," the East Wing said.
