Washington, DC - As colleges across the nation welcomed the Class of 2017 this week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Thursday offered his list of the "Top 9 Things Every College Freshman Needs To Know," posting it on Buzzfeed.com as a "community contributor." (Duncan, above)
Duncan's list included animated GIFs illustrating his tips for both social and academic success, which includes participating in First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, he wrote.
In tip #2, "Beer Is Not A Major Food Group," Duncan advises against four years of alcohol-fueled partying, and encourages students to check out the Agriculture Department's MyPlate nutrition campaign, created to support Let's Move!. The Gif featured a young lady saying "You gotta eat your vegetables if you wanna have dessert!" (A screenshot, above)
healthy, eat well and stay focused," Duncan wrote. "Adopting a healthy lifestyle during
college will put you on a path for a healthy life beyond graduation.
Get started by becoming a MyPlate on Campus Ambassador."
In tip #7, "Get Physical," Duncan tells students to check out the Let's Move! website for tips on staying fit. The Gif featured 80's fitness icon Richard Simmons grooving (above), a reference the Class of '17 would most likely fail to understand.
"Staying physically active is not only good for your body, but also your mind," Duncan wrote. "Whether it’s ultimate Frisbee on the quad, intramural sports, or just shooting hoops, stay active. Visit letsmove.gov for ideas."
