First Lady Michelle Obama Has Dinner At DC's Equinox Restaurant

First Lady enjoys Chef Todd Gray's Maryland soft shell crabs during repeat visit to organic eatery...
Washington, DC - Keeping up her habit of private dinners outside the presidential mansion, First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday evening, July 16th enjoyed dinner at Equinox restaurant, located  just blocks from the White House.  It was her third visit since 2009 to chef/owner Todd Gray's American cuisine paradise that relies on organic and local sourcing.

Joined by friends, Mrs. Obama did not sit in a private dining room, but instead sat in the chic main dining room during her feast, surrounded by other patrons.  Equinox alerted the world via Twitter, which included posting a photo of one of Mrs. Obama's selections, Maryland soft shell crabs.

"@flotus A pleasure to have you dine at Equinox - glad you enjoyed the Md Soft Shells!  #eatlocal #marylandseafood," was written on @EquinoxDC with the photo of Mrs. Obama's entree, above.

Served with English Sweet Pea Puree, Minted Tomato Butter, and Spotsylvania Sunflower Shoots, the crabs are $16.

Mrs. Obama last dined at Equinox in March of 2011, when she hosted a luncheon for then-First Lady of Mexico Margarita Zavala, wife of former President Felipe Calderón.  Mrs. Obama's first visit was with her husband in January of 2009, for a belated birthday dinner days ahead of the President-elect Obama's first inauguration.  It was the Obamas' first DC Date Night Dinner.

Gray's history with the White House...
Chef Gray is well acquainted with Mrs. Obama: He and his wife Ellen Gray are school lunch activists.  Gray was a guest chef at the White House in October of 2009, and he's such an active participant in the Let's Move! component Chefs Move to Schools that he was a featured speaker when Mrs. Obama launched the project in a huge ceremony on the South Lawn in June of 2010.  (Above, Mrs. Obama listens as Gray addresses a crowd of hundreds)

Info: Equinox is at 1818 Connecticut Avenue, Washington, DC, 20006. Phone: 202-331-8118.
