The Presidential sugar master will wow Emerald Isle crowds with dessert-making advice and a discussion about the Let's Move! campaign...
White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses will be in President Obama's ancestral homeland this weekend, visiting Ireland as a featured speaker at the first-ever Ballymaloe Literary Festival of Food and Wine on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. (Yosses at the White House, above)
The exciting event is at the Ballymaloe House and Ballymaloe Cookery School, owned by Darina Allen, the Emerald Isle's most famous chef and a best-selling author and TV personality. Some of the globe's "best known chefs, critics, commentators, kitchen gardeners, foragers and wine experts" will be gathered for the weekend in Shanagarry, County Cork, as will hundreds of enthusiasts, according to festival spokesman Eimear O'Brien.
Yosses was one of Amerca's most acclaimed pastry chefs before
joining the White House staff in 2007 during the Bush Administration. He is author of two
cookbooks, the incredible The Perfect Finish: Special Desserts for Every Occasion, published in 2010, and the beginners' guide Desserts for Dummies, published before he took up his presidential post. Yosses is a master sugar artist as well as an expert in molecular gastronomy.
On Saturday, Yosses will be solo as he discusses his futuristic/farm-to-table pastry aesthetic during a session title "Modern Dessert Making," from 11:30 AM--1:00 PM.
On Sunday, from 9:30--11:30 AM, Yosses will speak about his work with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign during a panel titled "In Conversation, The Grass Roots of The Revolution: Edible Education." He'll join Allen, a leader in Ireland's farmers market movement, and acclaimed Australian chef/cookbook author Stephanie Alexander, founder of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, for a discussion moderated by travel and food writer David Prior.
America's legendary activist chef Alice Waters was supposed to be part of this panel, but she will not be at the festival due to a recent fire in her Berkeley restaurant, said O'Brien.
Other speakers at the festival include Claus Meyer, co-founder of Noma, voted 'Best Restaurant in the World' three times; Jancis Robinson, Skye Gyngell, Rowley Leigh, Matthew Fort, David Thompson, Madhur Jaffrey, and Donal Skehan. The full list. Tickets are still available, including day passes.
Yosses' weekend will be capped by a big event on Monday, May 6 in New York City. He will be honored by the James Beard Foundation as one of six new inductees on the heady list of "Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America." The ceremony will be held during an evening gala at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Yosses will be attending the ceremony, according to the East Wing
