2012 White House Holiday Craft: Terrarium Christmas Tree Ornaments

First Lady's passion for gardening is highlighted in Green Room holiday ornaments...
The White House is bedecked with an incredible array of decorations for First Lady Michelle Obama's theme 'Joy to All,' which features 54 different Christmas trees, with a spotlight on members of the military and First Dog Bo.  In addition to releasing special holiday recipes, the White House has also been issuing instructions for craft projects, such as the Pomegranate Tree Ornaments Mrs. Obama made with kids from military families when she previewed her decor.  Each room has a different mini-theme, and in the Green Room, the ornaments are tiny terrariums filled with succulent plants, an homage to Mrs. Obama's passion for gardening.  (Above, Mrs. Obama and children from military families beside one of the Green Room trees)

The round and tear-drop-shaped ornaments feature tiny skaters, carolers, and birds alongside the succulent plants, and each is a charming tableau.  Download the instructions here {PDF}; it contains all directions as well as a list of supplies.

Another fun White House project is tiny snow-globes made with screw-top jars; Download the instructions here  {PDF}.  The Official White House Christmas Tree in the Blue Room, an 18 1/2 foot beauty, is dedicated to Mrs. Obama's Joining Forces campaign, and features ornaments decorated by children living on military bases around the world.  Paper stars decorated by the kids are spotlighted; Download your own Joining Forces star here {PDF}.
