Vilsack Is A Guest Chef At Iowa State Fair

Fairlicious: The Agriculture Secretary flips burgers...
After visiting the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines with President Obama on Monday night, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was back for another visit on Thursday. This time, the Secretary went to work, flipping hamburgers as a guest chef. The Fair's theme this year, 'It's Fairlicious,' spotlights the many foods that are offered from vendors. Sweating over a hot outdoor grill, Vilsack, a former two-term governor of the Hawkeye State, wore a red apron monogrammed with his name that promoted pork, which read 'Be Inspired.'

Iowa raises 28% of America's hogs, and the President on Monday announced that USDA will be purchasing $100 million worth of pork before the end of the fiscal year to support livestock producers impacted by the drought. The moment was very inspiring for the hog industry; futures rose on the day of the announcement, climbing to their highest price in a week on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Vilsack's wife, Christie Vilsack, is running for Iowa's Fourth Congressional District seat, challenging Rep. Steve King. The couple spoke separately on Monday morning at the Fair's soap box, Mrs. Vilsack speaking about her run for office, and the Secretary discussing President Obama's support for agriculture. About twenty people were on hand for the Secretary's remarks, reported the Des Moines Register.
