Senior Policy Advisor is on hand for donation presentation from Let's Move! partner company Save-A-Lot...Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass on Thursday joined brand ambassadors from Save-A-Lot grocery company as they arrived in Washington, DC to make a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. The visit to the largest food bank in the Metro region was part of the company's Fuel Your Family Road Trip, a project from July 27 to August 25 "to educate adults and children on how they can eat healthy and affordable food during the summer months," according to the food bank. Kass visited the food bank's warehouse and spoke with company reps and staff. (Above: Kass, third from right, with Save-A-Lot reps and food bank staff)
Kass looked on as the Save-A-Lot representatives donated a check for $2,500 and "55,000 school supplies." The money will proved 7,500 meals for area families, and the school supplies will benefit children participating in the food bank’s Kids Cafe and Weekend Bag Programs, which sends healthy food home with children.
Save-A-Lot parent company SuperValu is one of the grocery companies that have partnered with First Lady Michelle Obama's to support the Let's Move! campaign, pledging to build 250 Save-A-Lot stores in areas defined as food deserts over the next five years. These would serve 3.75 million people weekly, the company said, and create more than 6,000 new jobs in the communities.
