Go Team USA: First Lady meets with Mrs. Samantha Cameron, cheers on Serena Williams...UPDATE: Later in the day Mrs. Obama watched Team USA swimmers On day two of leading the Presidential Delegation to the 2012 London Summer Olympic games, First Lady Michelle Obama had a private meeting on Saturday morning with Mrs. Samantha Cameron before heading to the All England Lawn Tennis Club to watch US tennis star Serena Williams win her first Olympic match. Mrs. Obama was joined by Venus Williams and Delegate member Dominique Dawes, an Olympic gymnastics medalist who co-chairs the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Home alone at the White House, President Obama on Saturday morning traveled to FBI headquarters in Washington, DC to shoot hoops for close to two hours before returning to the residence. "Just finished watching @serenawilliams dominate her first game alongside the @MichelleObama #London2012," Dawes wrote on Twitter after the game, and posted a photo of Williams defeating Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-1, in the first round of their women's singles tennis match. Mrs. Obama's meeting with Mrs. Cameron, wife of David Cameron, was closed to press, but it was for tea, according to the White House, at an undisclosed location before the tennis match. Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Cameron, close in age, are both mothers, and have developed a strong relationship over the past few years, according to the White House. Not to mention that President Obama and the Prime Minister have something of a bromance going on, which was on full display during the Camerons' State Visit in March. Mrs. Obama first announced that she would be leading the Presidential Delegation to the Olympic games during the Cameron State Visit, when she escorted Mrs. Cameron to a mini Olympics event at American University. The two spouses were joined by US Olympians as they watched local school children dash around the gym doing sports games.
Saturday in the US: Let's Move! Olympic Fun Day...
Meanwhile, back in the USA on Saturday, families and kids across the nation were participating in events for Let's Move! Olympic Fun Day, organized by the Let's Move! campaign through Meetup.com."While I'm cheering on #TeamUSA at the #Olympics, families & neighbors back home are getting active for #LetsMoveDay. Keep it up! –mo," Mrs. Obama wrote on the @LetsMove account. Personal tweets from the First Lady are signed with her initials.
The Let's Move! campaign offered all kinds of ideas for the nationwide meetup events, from viewing parties to swimming contests to mini gymnastics events.
"We have almost 200 cities and towns and communities that have signed up to do events to really give kids opportunities to play and be active in the theme of the Olympics," said Sam Kass, Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives during a briefing earlier this week about Mrs. Obama's trip.
Kass is with Mrs. Obama in London. On Friday, ahead of the Opening Ceremony, Mrs. Obama joined Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for the Olympic Head of Government Reception. The First Lady began her day with a breakfast for Team USA at the London training facility for US Olympians, followed by her first-ever Let's Move! event on foreign shores. Held at Winfield House, the Regent's Park home of US Ambassador Luis Susman, Mrs. Obama and 2,000 kids were joined by Olympians and other sports heroes as they participated in fitness activities during Let's Move! On Sunday, Mrs. Obama will again be at Ambassador Susman's residence, where she will attend a closed-press brunch for the U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. Olympic alumni athletes and Team USA supporters, and have a closed-press meet & greet with US embassy staff. A top-tier bundler for the Obama campaign in 2008, Susman was rewarded with his post as Ambassador. The brunch is expected to have more than 100 guests, including potential US ex-pat donors for the President's re-election campaign.
On Sunday, the First Lady will again watch members of Team USA compete in the games, before meeting with US military and their families stationed at Mildenhall Air Force Base. The 6:30 PM event is the final official event on Mrs. Obama's schedule.
