Hosts breakfast for Gold Star Families, speaks at Arlington National Cemetery and Vietnam Veterans Memorial...
President Obama on Monday will mark Memorial Day and honor the men and women who have defended our nation. Joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, the President begins the day with a breakfast for Gold Star Families at the White House. Held in the State Dining Room, it is closed to press.
After, the President, Mrs. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will travel to Arlington National Cemetery. The President will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11:00 AM and deliver remarks in the Amphitheater at 11:20 AM.
In the afternoon at 1:50 PM, the President, Mrs. Obama and the Bidens will visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC for a ceremony in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War. The President will deliver remarks, joined by veterans and families.
“This month, we’ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, a time when, to our shame, our veterans did not always receive the respect and the thanks they deserved--a mistake that must never be repeated,” President Obama said on May 16.
"The Memorial Day gathering at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall marks the beginning of the national commemoration of the Vietnam War’s 50th anniversary program and is a joint effort between the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the National Park Service and the Department of Defense.," the White House said.
