Fans must pass Secret Service security screening and purchase a copy of the book at downtown Barnes & Noble store before Mrs. Obama's visit...
UPDATE: Click here for the post about the event
It's difficult to go on a book tour when you're married to the Leader of the Free World, but First Lady Michelle Obama will visit a Washington, DC, Barnes & Noble bookstore on Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 AM to autograph copies of her newly published book American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. Those wishing to see America's most famous first-time author have to purchase a copy of the book at the store and go through a Secret Service security clearance procedure four days ahead of the event, according to a store employee. Mrs. Obama will visit the downtown Barnes & Noble store located at 555 12 St. NW, at E St. On Friday, June 8th, those wishing to attend the event must purchase a copy of the First Lady's book at the location (for $19.20) and leave it at the store, according to the employee. At the same time, customers must also submit their social security number and show an official photo ID (driver's license, passport) to a Secret Service agent, and they will be issued a wristband to attend the First Lady's event on June 12. Book sales and wristbanding begin at 9:00 AM on June 8. The store's phone number is 202-347-0176.
The employee said she has not been told how many customers will actually receive wristbands. And a wristband does not guarantee that Mrs. Obama will actually autograph the book, she said. Store employees also do not know what the protocol is for those who purchase books and don't pass the Secret Service screening. The employee declined to give her name, citing company policy. A second employee repeated the same information. (Above: The bookjacket)
After going on sale nationwide on May 29, the $30 hardcover edition of American Grown was #5 on Barnes & Noble's own bestsellers list, where it is being sold for $19.20. All the details about the book are here. And click here for recipes from American Grown.
Mrs. Obama launched her book with a tour of network TV shows on May 29, visiting ABC's Good Morning America, The View, and Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
