Third time's a charm: after declining to appear at two previous dinners,
President Obama has accepted the invitation to the Gridiron Dinner on March 12 in Washington. The annual glam affair is hosted by the invite-only Gridiron Club, a cadre of high-profile journalists.
The President cited scheduling conflicts for both the 2009 and 2010 dinners, creating a minor "scandal" among the press corps, because every President since
Grover Cleveland has shown up to both roast and be roasted.
Susan Page, president of the Gridiron Club, tipped news outlets on Wednesday night that President Obama is at last making an appearance.
“I'm delighted to announce that President Obama will return to the warmth of the Gridiron Dinner this spring,” Page wrote. “Every president since Grover Cleveland has addressed the Gridiron Dinner during his tenure in the White House, and we're thrilled that President Obama will continue that unbroken tradition at our 126th anniversary dinner in March.”
Former
President Bill Clinton was the guest of honor last year, and President Obama sent a video greeting. The evening always features humorous skits and performances, and
First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden was
memorialized in a send-up song.
Health and Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius and a Republican who has yet to be named will also speak at the dinner.
