Visit to popular burger joint gets Drudge headline, too
First Lady Michelle Obama was spotted on Monday afternoon at Shake Shack in Washington, DC, ordering a ShackBurger, chocolate shake, French fries, and a Diet Coke. Mrs. Obama was attempting to enjoy a private outing at the newly opened diner in Dupont Circle, but a Washington Post reporter happened to be on the scene, and the paper reported the First Lady's lunch as "a whopper of a meal," with the headline "Michelle Obama orders 1,556 calorie meal at Shake Shack." In the interest of good investigative journalism, the Post later refigured the calorie load, based on Shake Shack's online nutrition information, and posted a correction that upped the calculation to 1,700 calories.
The Post story also mentioned Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign. The burger run caused street closures and a Secret Service presence, and was much noted on Twitter. The First Lady insists that the point of the Let's Move! campaign is balance and moderation, and occasional junk food jaunts are fine, but outings such as this one cause critics to howl. The lunch earned Mrs. Obama a headline on Drudge Report ("Michelle Obama Enjoys 1,556 Calorie Lunch"), which linked to a Fox News story.
"First Lady Michelle Obama may have temporarily forgotten the lessons of her own anti-obesity campaign when she indulged in a sinfully caloric lunch Monday at a popular new hamburger restaurant," Fox noted.
But even ABC News, which ostensibly isn't as partisan as Fox, reported Mrs. Obama's lunch with the headline "Spotted: Michelle Obama Indulging in 1,556 calorie lunch."
Mrs. Obama announced during her recent visit to Africa that French fries are her favorite food.
