First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to Southern California to attend the Tuesday funeral for former First Lady Betty Ford, the White House announced today. The widow of 38th President Gerald R. Ford, Mrs. Ford died peacefully on Friday, July 8, aged 93. Mrs. Obama will join members of the Ford family for the private funeral service at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, former First Lady Nancy, will also attend the invitation-only service. The Ford family has established www.bettyfordmemorial.com for citizens wishing to keep informed about funeral arrangements, and to sign an online condolence book.
Mrs. Ford's remains will be flown on Wednesday to Michigan, and she will be interred on Thursday beside her husband at the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids.
Mrs. Ford was born Elizabeth Anne Bloomer in Chicago on April 8, 1918, . President Ford served from 1974-1977, and died in 2006. They are survived by children Susan Ford Bales, Steven Meigs Ford, John Gardner Ford, and Michael Gerald Ford, as well as grandchildren.
