President Obama Attends G8 Working Dinner

On the menu: Seafood and freedom, democracy, debt...
President Obama's schedule on Thursday as he attended the G8 meeting in France was packed with meetings with fellow world leaders, and the day culminated in a working dinner at Le Ciro’s Barriere Restaurant in Deauville. Above, the President talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron before the start of the dinner.

On the G8 menu: Debt, debt, debt and more debt, as well as discussions of the Arab Spring and internet freedom, and food security and global hunger.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is president of the G8, and he hosted the dinner and attended with First Lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy, who is pregnant with their first child. The restaurant, which specializes in seafood, is considered one of the best in the seaside resort of Deauville. Merkel will be honored at the White House with a State Visit on June 7, which will culminate with the fourth State Dinner of the Administration. President Obama will present her with the 2010 Medal of Freedom, which he awarded her last year.

Bruni Sarkozy has spent much time with First Lady Michelle Obama, in the US and abroad. Mrs. Obama did not accompany President Obama to France, but instead returned home to Washington.

The President spent much of his time in London with Cameron, which included some burger flipping at a barbecue at 10 downing Street for troops and their families, co-hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Mrs. Samantha Cameron.
