UPDATE, June 22: A mug gets added to the ObFo archive
The folks in the Obama For America Campaign 2012 headquarters have a pretty wicked sense of humor. Today in an e-mail to supporters, Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot announced a special fundraiser: The "2012 Made In The USA" coffee mug, featuring a photo of President Obama and his long-form birth certificate. The mugs are available for a donation of $15 or more, and t-shirts with the same design are $25...or, er, more. (Above: The mugs)In April, when the White House released his long-form birth certificate, President Obama denounced the “sideshows and carnival barkers” who had kept the issue of his place of birth alive since the 2008 campaign.
"There's really no way to make this stuff completely go away. The only thing we can do is laugh at it -- and make sure as many other people as possible are in on the joke," wrote Smoot about the questions regarding President Obama's place of birth. Thus the mug and t-shirts.
Smoot noted that the Birther campaign swag is in part a response to a new book being published this week titled "Where's The Birth Certificate?: The Case That Barack Obama is Not Eligible To Be President” by John Corsi, which she dubs "a greatest-hits reel of delusions" about the President.
A Gallup poll released last week found that 13% percent of those polled believe the President “definitely” or “probably” was not born in the US. 65% responded that the President “definitely” or “probably” was born in the U.S, while 20% responded that they don’t know enough to form an opinion.
"Last year, the President said, "I can't spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead," Smoot wrote. "This [the swag] is about as close as we can get."
"So let's just do this," Smoot added, with a link to the website where the mugs can be purchased.
