North & South Lawn fountains dyed green...
The fountains on the North Lawn and the South Lawn of the White House were dyed green for St. Patrick's Day 2011, a tradition President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama started in 2009. (Above: The South Lawn)
It's a bit of hometown celebrating the Obamas imported to Washington: Every year in Chicago, on the weekend before St. Patrick's Day, the Chicago River is dyed green in honor of the city's large Irish community and upcoming parade. Mobs of holiday visitors were outside the White House all day, taking photos with the green fountains as a backdrop. Below, the North Lawn fountain.
