Let's Move! Stars & Stripes Edition: Michelle Obama Visits Fort Jackson & Oprah Winfrey

First Lady takes day trip to Chicago today to tape The Oprah Winfrey Show; travels to South Carolina next week to meet with troops
First Lady Michelle Obama will travel to Columbia, South Carolina next Thursday, Jan. 27, for a visit to Fort Jackson. Mrs. Obama will join the troops for a series of events that highlight the intersection of Let’s Move! and military readiness, according to the East Wing. She'll tour the base and visit Ft. Jackson’s “Go Green” dining program, which encourages healthy eating.

The First Lady will also participate in a briefing about the consequences of childhood obesity, poor childhood nutrition and lack of physical exercise for the military, and learn about the Army’s programs to address these issues. In June of 2010, Mrs. Obama visited Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, and ObFo took a very unscientific poll of the very fit Marines in the crowd, as we waited for Mrs. Obama to arrive and address the huge crowd. Few of the Marines had heard of Let's Move!. The base has a Taco Bell, a McDonald's, a Dominos Pizza, and many other fast food restaurants, but the Marines said that the food served in the mess halls tended to be very healthy. Mrs. Obama, Oprah, & supporting military families
During Mrs. Obama's Camp Pendleton visit, she issued a national challenge to Americans to support military families. Today, Mrs. Obama is taking a day trip to Chicago, where she'll join Oprah Winfrey to tape an episode of her TV show that focuses on the same issue; it is one of Mrs. Obama's signature initiatives. The episode will air next week, on the same day Mrs. Obama makes her visit to Ft. Jackson. In a one-on-one interview with Oprah, Mrs. Obama plans to discuss her plans to “launch a comprehensive national campaign in the coming months to recognize, honor and provide ways for everyone to step up and answer the call” to support military families, the White House said.

NBC's Tom Brokaw, and Washington Post's Bob Woodward and a young military family will join Mrs. Obama and Oprah.
