Guest List: China State Dinner For President Hu

225 guests, including two former Presidents, movie stars, fashionistas, CEOs, Cabinet Secretaries, lawmakers....
The White House is expecting 225 guests this evening when President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama honor President Hu Jintao of China with the third State Dinner of the administration. The "quintessentially American" dinner will be spread between the State Dining Room, the Red Room, and the Blue Room. Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses have no guest chef joining them in the kitchen. (Above, from l: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Dr. Jill Biden and Vice President Joe Biden watch the entertainment in the East Room)

The Presidents and First Lady will be seated in the State Dining Room, and their toast remarks will be "beamed into" the Red and Blue Rooms via flat screen TV.

UPDATE: The President and Mrs. Obama welcomed President Hu during an arrival ceremony shortly after 6:00 PM under the North Portico. Mrs. Obama's gown was designed by Alexander McQueen.

The guest list includes former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, film star Jackie Chan, Olympic skater Michelle Kwan, designer Vera Wang, actor B.D. Wong, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, superstar songstress Barbra Streisand and her husband actor James Brolin are among the business CEOs and lawmakers invited, too.

"I'm here because I used to work in a Chinese restaurant," Streisand quipped to reporters as she arrived through the Booksellers entrance in the East Wing.

Robert Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, is invited; Disney joined the Let's Move! campaign in 2010. Coco Cola CEO Muhtar Kent is invited; in 2009, Kent suggested President Obama might be a communist for considering a tax on soda and sugary beverages.

Beau Biden, Attorney General of Delaware and son of Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, is on the guest list. The GOP was represented by Sen. Richard Lugar, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman.

Entertainment following the dinner will be in the East Room, which is decorated in bright yellow silks. It is quintessentially American, too: Music from Chris Botti, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Herbie Hancock, Lang Lang, Dianne Reeves and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

Hancock was invited to dine, too.

The dinner menu has a focus on sustainability, affordability and local sourcing, and was cooked by White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, with no guest chefs invited to help, as occurred for the previous two State Dinners hosted by the President and First Lady. Produce from the Kitchen Garden and honey from the White Hosue Bee Hive was used, as were crops from the The Chef's Garden, a family-owned farm in Huron, Ohio.
