Rainy Hawaii fun: Bowling, basketball & a shave ice run...
It was a gray and drizzly day in Kailua, Hawaii, so President Obama spent the afternoon indoors bowling and playing basketball with daughters Malia and Sasha, at nearby Marine Corps Base Hawaii. They were joined by Chicago friends, and a high school friend of Mr. Obama from Hawaii, and their children. After, President Obama and his large entourage stopped in at Island Snow, a trendy beachwear boutique in Kailua that features a popular shave ice counter, which is the Hawaiian version of a sno cone. It was the President's first outing in public since arriving on island. (Above: The President tastes his shave ice, which was a mix of Melona Lemon-Lime and Cherry)
The President and the girls visited last year during holiday vacation, too. The store offers "The Snowbama," a treat that blends three fruit juices in honor of the President, and a photo of the President and his daughters is on the top of Island Snow's website.
The First Lady wasn't present for the group outing. The President was casually attired in khaki shorts, a black polo shirt and black rubber flip flops as he tried to wrangle the many excited kids. (Above: The President and Malia at the counter)
"Once you've ordered, go back!" the President commanded, as the kids flocked around the counter.
"Nice, nice" President Obama said as Sasha placed her order at the counter, producing a bright red and green shave ice.
"Why don't you guys go out and eat," he suggested to the kids who had already received their orders. The kids did as told.
After much discussion with the staffer working the shave ice operation, the President ordered a mix of Melona Lemon-Lime and Cherry. After holding up his confection, he tasted it, and declared, “it is really good.”
The President paid cash for the order, a total of $38.12, and left a cash tip in the strategically placed jar on the counter. (Above, the President, Malia, and friends outside Island Snow)
White House photographer Pete Souza took group photos with the beaming young clerks, before the President exited with a "Thank you guys!"
The President and his shave ice party then hung around the parking lot of Kailua Beach Center, where Island Snow is located, enjoying their ices before heading back to their vacation rental.
