The First Lady and Sasha, 9, were greeted on the steps of the seaside palace, and then posed for formal photos with Their Majesties and daughter Princess Letizia before heading inside for lunch. arivent Palace is the summer holiday retreat for King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia, and located near Marbella, Spain, where Mrs. Obama and Sasha have been vacationing since August 4 with a small group of family friends. The luncheon is an "official visit" by the First Lady to Their Majesties, according to the White House, and comes on the last day of the trip. (At left: Sasha meets the King)State Gifts: King Juan Carlos presented Mrs. Obama with seeds for the White House garden, according to a palace spokesman, and Queen Sophia "made a present of handicrafts typical of Mallorca." Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden, one of her signature projects, has inspired the planting of food gardens around the world.
"When I travel around the world, no matter where I've gone so far, the first thing world leaders, prime ministers, kings, queens ask me about is the White House garden," Mrs. Obama said last year. The second thing Mrs. Obama is asked about, she said, is First Dog Bo.

Mrs. Obama is now en route back to Washington, where she will host a belated birthday barbecue for President Obama at the White House today. The President turned 49 on August 4th, and Mrs. Obama phoned home with international birthday wishes.Related: The First Lady was showered with foodie gifts--and plenty of media controversy during her trip to Spain. On Thursday, the Senate passed critical child nutrition legislation, and Mrs. Obama issued a statement and phoned Senate leaders. President Obama welcomed King Juan Carlos to the White House for a private lunch in February of 2010, which was prepared by DC chef Jose Andres, a longtime friend of the King.
