First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a special Kitchen Garden harvest and picnic today, in honor of Chefs Move To Schools. Top Chef host Tom Colicchio had a special tete-a-tete with Mrs. Obama, moderated by Food Initiative Coordinator Sam Kass, in the middle of the veggie-pulling. Kass is appearing on an upcoming episode of Top Chef: Washington DC. (above; Kass has his back to camera).
But before his chat with the First Lady, Colicchio got up to some cute hi-jinks with a salad bowl...
It was an exceptionally hot day, with the temperature hovering around 90 degrees. Colicchio decided to re-purpose his salad bowl for some insta-shade (above).
When he wasn't playing with his salad bowl, Colicchio joined Mrs. Obama and Cat Cora, Marcus Samuelsson, White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses and pastry assistant Susie Morrison, Todd Gray of DC's Equinox restaurant, and Bill Telepan of New York's Telepan restaurant in picking arugula, baby spinach, broccoli, rhubarb and other vegetables from the garden. A group of DC elementary school kids were of course on hand to help.
The chefs then created a special outdoor garden meal with the kids. Prep was done at a table set up by the garden. The kids got veggie washing, slicing and dicing lessons from the chefs, and then dined underneath some shade trees beside the garden. Their healthy feast included grilled chicken salad and rhubarb strawberry crisp.
