Ready, Set, Go!
President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha and Ms. Marian Robinson joined the Easter Bunny on the Truman Balcony to welcome guests to the White House and officially open the 2010 Easter Egg Roll just before 11:00 AM this morning.
It's hot, bright, and sunny in Washington and the South Lawn had already been hoppin' with guests and activities for a few hours when the First Family came to their own mobbed backyard to join the fun. There are hula hoopers, basketball players, a Yoga Garden, and of course the Rock n' Egg Roll stage, where the cast of Glee has already performed. Down at the bottom, there's a family farmers market, and the White House chefs demonstrating healthy recipes.
The crowd cheered madly as President Obama wished everyone a Happy Easter.
"We are thrilled that all of you could come," the President said. "I'm not going to make a long speech, because we’ve got the best speaker, the smartest and best-looking of the older Obamas--and that would be the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama."
The First Lady stepped to the microphone to much applause and cheers. "You guys, we are so excited to have you," Mrs. Obama said. "Welcome to the 2010 Easter Egg Roll. The theme for this year’s event is “Ready, Set” what?"
The crowd shouted "Go!"
"Today we have transformed the South Lawn into a playground," Mrs. Obama said. "And our hope today is that in addition to having fun and doing some of the traditional activities like the egg roll and the Easter egg hunt, that you can learn about beginning to live a more healthy life."
Mrs. Obama urged the crowd to visit the "wonderful food stands over in the back."
"We’ve got some of the area’s and the nation’s best chefs," Mrs. Obama said. You can learn to cook. There’s a farmers market. You can see the garden."
She also told everyone to visit the fitness activities arrayed across the South Lawn, too.
"We have the Washington Redskins! " Mrs. Obama Said. "We have Apolo Ohno!" More cheering.
And then it was time for Presidential Egg Rolling...Mr. & Mrs. Obama shook many hands as they made their way down to the Egg Rolling course...
