The First Lady visited Spike Mendelsohn's Good Stuff Eatery on Capitol Hill this afternoon, along with eighteen members of her staff. Of course the outing caused a mob scene of fans, including food/culture blogger DC365, who snapped the FLOTUS Foto, above.
Mendelsohn's sister, Micheline Mendelsohn, told Washington Post that FLOTUS and her staff sat on the second floor of the restaurant, and were served a selection of burgers to sample, including the Colletti's Smokehouse burger, which recently won Rachel Ray's Burger Bash best burger in the country prize. They also had free-range turkey burgers, the "Prez Obama" burger, regular burgers and bacon cheeseburgers, and two kinds of French fries, sea-salt dusted ones and a thyme, rosemary and cracked pepper version, as well as some "Cliff's Homegrown Vidalia Onion Petals," a kind of high-end fried blooming onion.
Fluff. And also once again, poor Wolf Blitzer's The Situation Room turned into The Obama Hamburger Hour. Poor Wolf keeps getting handed the food stories, because Sit Room is the afternoon program. This time, Wolf parsed the event with fellow on-air personality Jack Cafferty, who fully related to Mrs. Obama's need for a burger."I just had a burger before coming on air," Cafferty said, and went on to describe his own burger bash. Blitzer at least had the sense to look a scoche sheepish during the exchange.
And hey--the visit to Good Stuff was no haphazard, accidental trip to just any old burger joint. But more on that later!
